Confirmation

Confirmation is one of the seven sacraments instituted by Christ for the conferral of grace and the strengthening of the union between individual souls and God.  The delivery of holy grace and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are achieved through the laying on of hands and/or anointing of the Confirmand.  According to The Catechism of the Catholic Church Confirmation should:

        * unite us more firmly to Christ;

        * increase the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us;

        * render our bond with the Church more perfect;

        * give us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and
           action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be
           ashamed of the Cross.

Beginning July 1, 2010, the Diocese of Richmond has directed all 150 parishes to do several things to bring about uniformity and consistency in regards to the preparation for the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation.  First, all parishes will have a Confirmation program that is separate and distinct from current religious education and youth ministry.  Second, Confirmation Preparation will begin and end in the sophomore year.  Last, all parishes will teach the same topics within the same amount of time.  The new policies and guidelines will double the size of our parish program for the 2010-2011 school year as both tenth and eleventh graders will be confirmed in the spring.

Sponsors are to be a fully initiated Catholic, actively participating in their parish and be willing to meet with their candidate throughout the preparation process. Confirmation typically occurs in the spring following Easter. Please contact the Christian Formation office regarding any questions or concerns.
