Peace & Justice Liturgical Council

Chairperson: Earl Linneman

This Committee is responsible for assessing and responding to the needs of the deprived, disabled, neglected and oppressed of the parish, the civic community and the world at-large. It promotes legislative advocacy, peacemaking and other efforts to change social structure. The Committee identifies the resources available for service activities and through the Subcommittees, reaches out to those in need.

Red Cross Blood Drive
Volunteers help plan and coordinate Blood Drives and help Red Cross personnel with registrations, and serving refreshments.

Commitment: 1-2 per year about 2-4 hours

Community Resource Network (CRN) Food Closet
The CRN Food Closet, located at the Chesapeake Human Services, collects, stores and distributes food to needy families in our community. Our parish sponsors monthly food collections. Volunteers needed to support this ministry include a coordinator and helpers willing to assist in the collection and delivery of donated food items.

Commitment: monthly about 4 hours

Holiday Food Baskets
Participants in this ministry purchase and deliver holiday groceries to needy families. This program is a family-to-family project. Volunteers are needed to coordinate activities, purchase, and deliver groceries.

Commitment: Selected holidays

Gifts From The Heart
This is an alternative gift-giving program for the Christmas season. Each year, several charities are selected to receive donations collected during the project. A special Christmas card is prepared to representing the adopted charity. The card symbolizes the true meaning of the program - helping those less fortunate. Volunteers are needed to coordinate and assist in various project tasks.

Commitment: Christmas Season about 8 hours

Habitat For Humanity
Volunteers contribute their time, funds, and talents to construct a single-family dwelling for a needy family in the community. Volunteers work together with Chesapeake Habitat Interfaith Partners (CHIPs). The group is responsible for raising the necessary funds, materials, and resources to begin the building process. Volunteers are needed to coordinate the program, assist with the construction phases, and provide administrative support.

Commitment: Flexible

Meals On Wheels
This program provides hot, nourishing meals to those in the community that are unable to prepare their own. Volunteers, usually in teams of two, deliver between six to ten hot meals to local community members. All assigned deliveries can usually be completed within an hour. Meals and delivery instructions are provided by Chesapeake Meals on Wheel Inc. at Chesapeake General Hospital. Volunteers needed include a coordinator, and drivers to deliver meals.

Commitment: About one hour per month

Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (NEST)
NEST is a group of approximately 32 churches, synagogues and other organizations whose charter is to provide shelter to the homeless during the winter months. The program runs from mid-November to mid-April each year. Each week two churches house and prepare meals for 50-100 homeless guests on a rotating basis. Volunteers donate food, prepare and serve meals, plan activities, stay overnight and work the bussing facilities.

Commitment: Two weeks per year, flexible

Pastoral Care
This year round ministry provides for the needs of those who are confined to their home or institution. Volunteers visit these individuals on a regular basis and provide companionship. Eucharist is taken to those individuals who request it.

Commitment: Flexible

Prison Ministry
This year-round ministry consists of ministering to the religious needs of individuals who are in correctional facilities. Volunteers are accompanied by a priest who administers the Sacraments. Volunteers provide fellowship to the inmates.

Commitment: Flexible, 1-2 hours per month

Respect For Life
This ministry focuses on increasing awareness in all areas pertaining to the respect for human life. This includes the rights of the unborn, care for the elderly and terminally ill, and issues related to the death penalty. An important aspect of this ministry is to educate parishioners on legal, ethical, and moral issues pertaining to the right to life. Volunteers are needed to coordinate activities and participate in researching and disseminating information to parishioners.

Commitment: Flexible

Advent Outreach
Each Advent this program raises awareness of the parish to the needs of those less fortunate. Children's gifts and food baskets are provided for about 45 families. Volunteers deliver the collected items prior to Christmas. This is a family-to-family approach.

Commitment: Varies according to participation level
